Last year, I was flirting with falsies. For the entire year 2019, every 2–3 weeks, I scheduled a one hour touch up for eyelash extensions. Other than that — it was magnificent and maintenance-free. I liked my lash extensions; it looked and felt natural. I was saving tons of time and effort in the morning. Sweaty yoga class or ocean swim would not mess mascara, eyeliner, or eye shadow since I wasn’t wearing any. Until one day, I woke up with allergic contact dermatitis.
Goodbye eyelashes! And Bonjour Tristesse!
Unquestionably, eyeliner, mascara, and long thick eyelashes persuade the world that eyes, the main feature of the human face, look outstanding. Delboeuf illusion is when a dot is perceived bigger when surrounded by a larger ring; what happens when eye makeup is applied. It is not rocket science; it’s just mascara. Millions use eye cosmetics but nobody talks about how the use of different makeup products in such proximity of the eyes influences the level of comfort of eyes and ocular health.
Eyeliner. Applying eyeliner or mascara may create up to 13% more noticeable eyes according to science. Eyeliner increases observed eye size only in the absence of mascara. If eyeliner and mascara used together, eyeliner has no additional effect on the appearance. Some women apply it very close to the eye itself, the fragrances, preservatives, antioxidants, emollients, resins, pigments, and additives in an eyeliner end up on the surface of the eye. The eye is continually “washed” in a detergent-like mixture of the residual cosmetics, sometimes causing dryness, allergic reaction, and infections of the eye. The new invention is a magnetic eyeliner patented by beauty companies to hold false magnetic eyelashes. This magnetic gel eyeliner contains magnetic material, for example, neodymium, a rare earth metal. The potential effects of neodymium are not well studied but presumed to be safe. Small residual particles of neodymium (dust) could be very irritating to the eyes and moderately irritating to the skin.
Mascara contains preservatives that penetrate the eye surface every day. Three rules of safe mascara are simple. One — mascara required to be free of contamination and free of bacteria. Buy a mascara made by reputable manufacturers to decrease the chances of applying something that is tainted with bacteria. Two — use only fresh mascara; with time, the preservative in mascara loses its efficacy, and the bacteria may start to grow inside of the tube. Three — do not share your mascara with friends and family to avoid developing an eye infection.
Makeup remover. Studies have shown that using a makeup remover around eyes promotes dryness of the eye by changing the properties of the liquid substance encapsulating the eye. Twenty participants compared the effects of three eye cosmetic removal products, an oil- and alcohol-free formulation, an oil-based microemulsion, and a micelle solution. All three products modified the evaporation of natural eye lubricating substances. Oil-based eye makeup remover had the most drying effect. However, not removing eye makeup is even more dangerous.
Eyelash extensions application is when a synthetic eyelash glued to your natural eyelash. Very natural looking these extensions last weeks. However, according to recent research, the application process might cause itching, redness, pain, or heavy eyelids in half of the people “flirting with falsies.” A lash glue adhesive is used in this delicate and sensitive area of the face. And the lash glue has been circled to be the main cause of unwanted complications. Lash glues are typically cyanoacrylate based and often contain additives such as latex, ammonia, and formaldehyde. All these additives are known to provoke allergic dermatitis.
And in many cases, the allergy occurs after multiple uses of cyanoacrylate, known as delayed allergic reaction. The acrylate in the eyelash glue is similar to the product used for acrylic nails. Let’s hope that your eyes are tougher than nails.
The application process of eyelash extension is normally 60 min or more; the technician regularly applies a pad or a patch under the lower lash line to attempt to protect the eye and skin. These pads might contain eye irritating preservative substance methylisothiazolinone. Also, falsies can prevent your eyes from closing properly during sleep, which makes the naturally occurring liquid in the eye evaporate faster.
Magnetic eyelash extensions are designed to stick to magnetic eyeliner or another piece of false magnetic eyelashes. Magnets made from neodymium are strong and can pull each other from considerable distances. If not handled carefully, they snap together very quickly and forcefully. Neodymium magnets are being tested for medical magnetic braces and magnetic levator eyelid prosthesis, but the jury is still out whether its safe and biocompatible with skin.
Eyes are converting the light into brain messages to make sense of the world around them. Keep eyes beautiful and healthy.
